SUMMARY:Energy & Resource Constraints Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Gasoline prices set an all-time average high at $5.01/gallon on June 13. In May\, diesel prices set a new record at $5.51/gallon. Both Dominion Energy and Pepco have recently announced rate hikes for electricity costs in our region. Higher prices are straining an already disrupted supply chain.  With peak travel and energy usage times already here\, it’s creating a ripple effect on the economy with a greater likelihood of recession. \nHospitality\, construction\, shipping & logistics\, aviation\, and many other industries feel these impacts. How can the business community mitigate rising costs and still maintain higher profit margins? In this briefing\, our expert panelists will discuss how high energy prices and resource constraints are impacting everything from inflation to increased labor costs\, what steps should be taken to protect your company’s bottom line\, and how to prepare for future disruptions. \nJoin us on July 26th for a strategically important briefing on Energy & Resource Constraints\, the fifth segment of our Emerging Economic Threats Series presented by McGuireWoods LLP. \n

SUMMARY:Regional Emergency Preparedness Briefing
DESCRIPTION:The effects of climate change are intensifying storms and wreaking havoc across the globe.  Aging power grid infrastructure cannot keep up with increased demands and peak usage. In April\, a tornado touched down in Tysons. Flash flooding occurs nearly every time a major rainstorm rolls through our area. How can businesses better mitigate losses from potential threats and disasters? Now more than ever\, businesses and enterprises need to be planning for emergencies and focusing on resiliency. In this briefing\, top regional experts on emergency preparedness will discuss potential threats to the business community and the best practices for mitigation and recovery. \nPanelists: \n\nLicy DoCanto\, Managing Director\, Washington\, D.C. & APCO Mid-Atlantic\, APCO Worldwide (Facilitator)\nClint Osborn\, Chief of Operations\, Operations Division\, DC Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency\nJim Sheaffer\, Chairman\, Board of Directors\, American Red Cross\, National Capital Area\nMarc Barbiere\, Director\, Office of Emergency Management\, Georgetown University\n\n  \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE EMERGING ECONOMIC THREATS SERIES:\nWe are currently seeing an escalation of numerous\, interconnected threats that will impact business across the region. These threats are evolving rapidly\, and regional leaders need to prepare. In addition to the many risks resulting from the pandemic and long-term risks such as climate change\, we are now confronted with serious economic concerns. In this new series focused on Emerging Economic Threats leading experts will help us cut through the daily headlines. \nThe series will examine the following tracks: \n\nCapital Market Volatility\nInflation & Supply Chains\nCyber Security\nRegional Emergency Preparedness\nEnergy & Resource Constraints\nWorkforce Technology\n\nAdditional topics will be covered as trends and threats evolve and change. \n  \nSERIES PRESENTED BY:

SUMMARY:Cyber Security Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Cyberattacks are becoming more aggressive\, widespread\, and consistently state-sponsored as the geopolitical climate rapidly evolves. Malware and ransomware attacks have boomed\, while the rise of cryptocurrencies makes it easy for online criminals to hide payments they have collected. Just in April\, North Korean hackers stole more than $600 million in cryptocurrency from a US company in a single hack according to the FBI. Often\, hackers target businesses to steal trade secrets or disrupt critical infrastructure\, food supplies and energy. \nLosses from these activities are beginning to mount. How can the business community better prepare for what seems to be an inevitable cyberattack? \nExpert panelists will discuss potential threats that could affect our region and economic recovery.  We will discuss what steps and precaution organizations should have in place to prevent any such threats\, and if the unthinkable happens\, how to work with law enforcement to mitigate damages. \nPanelists: \n\nEmily Mossburg\, Principal\, Cyber Risk Advise & Implement Leader\, Deloitte Risk & Financial Advisory (Facilitator)\nBindu Sundaresan\, Director\, Cybersecurity\, AT&T\nBenjamin Gilbert\, Cybersecurity Advisor – Region III\, CISA\nFernando Maymi\, Chief Information Security Officer\, IronNet\nC. SUMMARY:The Future of Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Globalization\, technology\, racial injustice\, climate change\, resource constraints\, and a growing population are just a few variables pressuring our existing systems\, especially the basic concept of work. The pandemic exacerbated these factors and led to a massive attrition of human capital across all sectors. \nToday\, as our economy begins to grow back\, human capital again is needed to fill millions of jobs across the U.S. and right here in our region. Pre-pandemic\, a person’s work-life provided some sense of structure and parity within a business culture but how can we adapt that structure to a more modern workforce and still perform at high levels. We have an opportunity to re-imagine what a workplace and workforce can and should be\, so it’s insulated from future disruptions and provides more equity. Recruitment and talent acquisition will be key to attracting the right mix of skilled labor. \nGiven what we know about the pressures affecting all of us\, this panel will discuss emerging trends and begin to identify ways to select and recruit talent from a highly skilled labor pool. \nAbout the Future of Work Series\nThis extended series explores how the pandemic and other dynamics have influenced changes in how we work\, and by extension how we live\, learn\, travel\, shop\, and interact.
