5th Annual Welcome Back Washington Nationals Team Luncheon

On April 8th, the Board of Trade and presenting sponsor, PNC, hosted the 5th Annual Welcome Back Washington Nationals Team Luncheon at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC. 350 attendees enjoyed lunch with the Washington Nationals players and coaching staff and listened to Board of Trade President and CEO, Jim Dinegar, moderate a panel discussion with Nationals players Denard Span and Tyler Clippard, as well as Nationals GM Mike Rizzo and Manager Matt Williams. All proceeds from the event went to benefit the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation. 
 

TD Bank Morning Star Series Welcomed Biz Stone, Twitter
Co-founder and Internet Pioneer

On April 3rd, the Board of Trade and presenting sponsor, TD Bank, welcomed Biz Stone, Twitter co-founder and internet pioneer and author of the recently published book, Things A Little Bird Told Me: Confessions of the Creative Mind. More than 200 guests were captivated as Stone shared fascinating, personal stories from his life and career, conveying knowledge about the nature and importance of ingenuity today. An internet entrepreneur since 1999, Stone worked for Google prior to founding Twitter, helping to create both blogging and podcasting. Most recently, Stone is founder and CEO of his newest venture, Jelly.

Storms have the potential to present unique challenges for Greater Washington, particularly for the business community. On January 7th, the Board of Trade kicked of its 125th year, gathering Greater Washington’s top business leaders, corporate executives, senior elected officials and many others to recognize accomplishments througout 2013 and to look ahead for what 2014 may hold. Best-selling author, Dr. Peter W. Singer, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence for the Brookings Institution, also shared from his latest book, Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know, offering insight as Greater Washington increasingly becomes known as the world’s cyber capital.
 

J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr. Shares About Leadership From New Book, Without Reservations

On December 4th, the Board of Trade and presenting sponsors, Comcast Business and Comcast Spotlight, welcomed hometown success, J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International, Inc., and author of the recently published book, Without Reservations: How a Family Root Beer Stand Grew into a Global Hotel Company. Marriott spoke to more than 200 guests about growing the global lodging company, with more than 3,700 properties in over 73 countries and territories. His leadership with Marriott International spans more than 50 years, throughout which, he has compiled one of the greatest portfolio of lodging brands.

Washingtonian & Board of Trade Recognize the Region's Great Places to Work

On November 22nd, Washingtonian and the Board of Trade hosted the Great Places to Work breakfast, recognizing both the winners and the release of the highly-anticipated issue, featuring these regional companies who excel at engaging employees, offering great benefits, serving the community and doing business. Guest speaker and New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Tasha Eurich, shared insights from her new book, Bankable Leadership: Happy People, Bottom-Line Results and the Power to Deliver Both. Washingtonian leadership, including Cathy Merrill Williams, Publisher and President of Washingtonian Media, and Sherri Dalphonse, Senior Editor, also offered unique insight into what the magazine looks for when selecting great places to work and what trends they noticed when judging this year’s entries.
 

Cyber Security Bus Tour Explores Ft. Meade & Regional Opportunities

On November 20th, the Board of Trade hosted more than 80 business executives on a special bus tour to become familiar with the opportunities and major growth surrounding Fort Meade, as a result of Cyber Command being located there. Fort Meade's new Garrison Commander, Col. Brian P. Foley, offered insight into the third largest base in the U.S., with a growing workforce of more than 57,000 employees and new facilities being developed, many as a direct result of Cyber Command and anticipated expansion of cyber-oriented business in the Baltimore – Greater Washington Region. Beginning at the newly-expanded Clyde’s of Columbia, attendees also received briefings from executives from Howard Hughes Corporation, on Columbia’s growth in retail/housing' as well as on-board the buses from COPT, on National Business Park and its remarkable growth of government contractors; Anne Arundel Economic Development Center, on Odenton and the major development surrounding the MARC Station as a direct result of expected growth from Cyber Command, and more.
 

Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Shares From Latest Book, The Bully Pulpit

On November 13th, the Board of Trade welcomed Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and the nation's leading presidential historian, to share from her latest book, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism. Guests were captivated as Kearns Goodwin gave meaningful, fresh insight into the decades-long and complicated friendship of Roosevelt and Taft. With masterful research and poise, Kearns Goodwin offered candid insight into her runaway bestseller, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, to which the rights were acquired by Steven Spielberg for feature film, Lincoln; her Pulitzer Prize-winning book, No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II; and Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir; The Fitzgeralds and The Kennedys: An American Saga; and Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream.

Regional Policy Forum on Education

Kicking off the new school year, the Board of Trade hosted its inaugural Regional Policy Forum on Education on Wednesday, September 18th, welcoming some of the region’s top officials to address the issues and opportunities in our public school system. Panel featured: Chancellor Kaya Henderson for DC Public Schools; new Superintendent Karen Garza for Fairfax County Public Schools; and Superintendent Patrick Murphy for Arlington Public Schools.

 

 

TD Bank Morning Star Series Welcomed Seth Goldman, TeaEO of Honest Tea

On September 12th, the TD Bank Morning Star Series featured Seth Goldman, Co-Founder and TeaEO of Honest Tea, to share from his new book, Mission in a Bottle: The Story of Honest Tea, and to discuss the challenges and triumphs of creating the successful, locally-based business. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, Honest Tea is an expanding national brand, sold in over 100,000 grocery stores and restaurants across the country. In 2011, Honest Tea was acquired by Coke for over $100 million, while Seth continues to lead the operations, product development and overall vision of this mission-driven enterprise.
