DC's Mayor, Muriel Bowser Addresses Board of Directors

Mayor Bowser addressed the Board of Directors on Tuesday, May 12th and provided update of her first 100 days in office.  She spoke on important issues to the District, such as transportation, economic development, the budget and the importance of regionalism across Greater Washington.


Wage Theft Compliance - A Special Conference Call

On Tuesday, May 19th, Michael Watts, Associate Director Office of Wage-Hour, and Daniel King, Auditor Office of Wage-Hour, joined the Board of Trade for a special conference call to help the business community understand the business commitments for meeting compliance of the Wage Theft Prevention Amendment Act of 2014. On Friday, April 24th, the Board of Trade and presenting sponsor TD Bank welcomed Herminia Ibarra, author of the new book, Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader. Herminia spoke to over 125 business leaders about how they can redefine their job in order to make more strategic contributions; diversify their network so that they connect  to bigger range of stakeholders; and change their self-concept, allowing a familiar leadership style to evolve.

On Tuesday, April 7th, Fareed Zakaria, the host of CNN's flagship international affairs program -- Fareed Zakaria GPS -- spoke to over 150 business leaders about his new book, In Defense of a Liberal Education.  In his new book, Fareed turns his attention to the virtues of a liberal arts education -- how to write clearly, how to express oneself convincingly, and how to think analytically. Fareed as he argues for a renewed commitment to the world's most valuable educational tradition.

96th Annual Mid-Winter Dinner

On Wednesday, March 18th, the Board of Trade hosted our 96th Annual Mid-Winter Dinner at 1812 North Moore in Arlington. Over 300 business leaders attended the dinner at the tallest and newest building in the region, with unparalleled views of the Greater Washington Region. This annual event continues its tradition of premier networking with those who get business done in Greater Washington.


Regional Policy Forum on Transportation

On Thursday, March 12th, the Board of Trade assembled our region’s top transportation decision-makers to discuss major projects, outlook for more federal transportation funds, public-private partnerships and how we maximize what we have in place.  Speakers included the Hon. Aubrey Layne, Secretary of Transportation, Commonwealth of Virginia, the Hon. Peter. K. Rahn, Transportation Secretary, State of Maryland and Mr. Leif A. Dormsjo, Acting Director, District Department of Transportation.


Board of Trade 2015 Annual Meeting

The Board of Trade's Annual Meeting on January 14th featured a conversation with Chuck Todd, Moderator and Managing Editor of “Meet the Press” and the Political Director for NBC News. Over 400 of the region’s top business leaders, corporate executives, senior elected officials attended to hear from Chuck Todd and to recognize accomplishments and look toward the future.


Board of Trade Hosted Regional Leaders Forum Featuring Greater Washington Elected Officials

On December 10th, the Board of Trade hosted the Regional Leaders Forum with The Honorable Muriel Bowser, the Mayor-Elect of Washington, D.C.; The Honorable Rushern Baker, the County Executive for Prince George’s County; The Honorable Ike Leggett the County Executive for Montgomery County; and The Honorable Mary Hynes, the Vice Chair of the Arlington County Board. The four officials discussed regional priorities including transporation, education, economic development, affordable housing, the 2024 Olympic Games and the Purple Line.

On December 2nd, Patrick Tucker spoke to over 150 business leaders about how big data gets applied and how this will effect business. Patrick Tucker is the author of the recent The Naked Future: What Happens In a World That Anticipates Your Every Move, which investigates how data collected from smartphones, GPS systems, emails, tweets, Facebook posts and beyond will help predict almost anything.


Business Leadership Series Welcomed Walter Isaacson, Author of The Innovators 

On November 19th, Walter Isaacson spoke to over 250 business leaders about how to be an innovator in today's evolving world. Walter Isaacson is the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute and the author of Steve Jobs; Einstein: His Life and Universe; Benjamin Franklin: An American Life; Kissinger: A Biography and The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution.


 Regional Stormwater Management Forum 

The Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments convened government officials responsible for implementing  new stormwater management rules as well as the private sector builders and contractors who are subject to these rules. 

TD Bank Morning Star Series Welcomed Paul Taylor, Author of Next America

On October 24th, the Board of Trade and presenting sponsor, TD Bank, welcomed Paul Taylor, senior fellow at the Pew Center and author of the recently published book, The Next America: Boomers, Millennials, and the Looming Generational Showdown. Paul spoke to over 150 business leaders about the generational divide in the four generations: Millennials; Gen Xers; Baby Boomers and The Silent Generation and also how the demographics of Millennials are changing everything.

Special Emergency Preparedness Briefing

In light of growing tensions around the world, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the American Red Cross in the National Capital Region presented an in-depth preparedness briefing to provide attendees with better understanding of the implications for Greater Washington and the preparedness steps necessary for our region on September 30th.This program was a collaborative effort, demonstrating the strength and expertise in our region to ensure Greater Washington remains prepared and informed. Regional Policy Forum on Education

Kicking off the new school year, the Board of Trade hosted its inaugural Regional Policy Forum on Education on Thursday, September 25th, welcoming some of the region’s top officials to address the issues and opportunities in our public school system. Panel featured: Chancellor Kaya Henderson, DC Public Schools; Superintendent Karen Garza, Fairfax County Public Schools; Superintendent Dr. Kevin MaxwellPrince George's County Public Schools and Superintendent Dr. Patrick K. Murphy, Arlington Public Schools.


Southwest President and CEO Gary Kelly Shares Insights

On Friday, September 12th one of the foremost leaders in aviation spoke to over 300 business leaders. Gary Kelly is a 28-year Southwest Airlines veteran who currently serves as the Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer. Under Gary's leadership, Southwest has become the nation's largest airline in terms of originating domestic passengers carried. Gary is pioneering the airline's transformation through the integration of AirTran Airways and launching international destinations in 2014 for the first time in Southwest's history.
