Car Sharing Reduces Carbon Footprints and Fuel Costs

With 3,000 Zipcars serving more than 80,000 customers and business drivers worldwide, the world’s largest car sharing service built its business around going green. The strategy is simple: Members reserve Zipcar vehicles in their neighborhood to run errands and make trips they can’t do on foot. Customers pay an hourly or daily rate without having to pay for insurance or gas.

More than 40% of Zipcar members choose not to purchase a car or sell the one they have after joining, taking 20 private vehicles off the road for every Zipcar put on it. Members report driving 80% less than they did before car sharing, which means fewer greenhouse gasses and less congestion. With this success story in mind, Zipcar execs answered the following questions:

What ideas might be helpful to other Board of Trade members?
