SIGAL Leads by Example with Environmental Construction
As a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and a contributor to the original LEED USGBC rating system, SIGAL Construction is a green building pioneer. SIGAL's building work dates back to the 1980’s when it began incorporating environmentally preferable methods and materials into major new construction projects. Today SIGAL provides indoor air quality and energy management consulting, water quality and asbestos testing and services, green building design, construction administration, and implementation assistance for PEPCO and VEPCO Energy Conservation pilot programs.
Leading by example, SIGAL completed construction of its own LEED Silver office space in 2006 with the assistance of WDG Interior Architects, GHT & Associates Engineers and Sustainable Design Consulting. More than 23% of building materials are recycled, and all paints, sealants and carpets are ultra-low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitting, which promotes employee wellness. In addition, almost 40% of materials were regionally sourced to support the local economy and minimize the energy wasted by importing materials from outside the region. The project also includes an Indoor Air Quality Management Plan, individual temperature and lighting controls, optimized light and water fixtures, and glass side lights to allow more natural light. Located in Crystal City, this space is the first LEED-CI certified office in Arlington, and is located close to metro and bus routes.
