    Looking Forward: VA, MD Public Affairs Groups Draft 2006 Agendas

    At Board of Trade meetings last week, members of the Virginia and Maryland Public Affairs Groups worked to craft agendas for the 2006 legislative session in each state. Policy positions will be recommended to the Board of Directors this month on a wide range of issues, from transportation, taxes, and health care to higher education, government reform, and affordable housing.

    Laying the Trackwork: Area Leaders Pledge to Work for Dedicated Metro Funding

    At a regional summit on Monday that was co-sponsored by the Board of Trade, elected and appointed officials from DC, Maryland, and Virginia agreed to work together to find dedicated funding sources to insure Metro’s continued service as the system both ages and grows. At the request of the “Big 4” (Anthony Williams, Gerry Connolly, Doug Duncan, Jack Johnson), the Board of Trade has crafted a statement for their signatures which bolsters a resolution passed at the Summit. This statement will be incorporated in the Board’s efforts to build grassroots support for this issue.

    Supporting need-based financial aid for DC residents

    In testimony delivered Sept. 22 by Board of Trade Chair William H. Edwards, Jr., the Board supported legislation that would establish a need-based financial aid program for District residents.

    Board of Trade Members Briefed on the District’s Long-Term Environmental Plans

    The Jan. 25, 2005 Executive Briefing, facilitated by Stuart Freudberg, director of Environmental Programs for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, focused on the environmental issues facing the greater D.C. community, with specific attention given to air quality, water quality, and the Chesapeake Bay Restoration. Representatives from the Board of Trade, including Environmental Subcommittee Chair, Sam Black, and Director of Government Relations, Robert Grow, noted that addressing water and air quality issues is important not only from a health standpoint but also as it pertains to our region's "blue infrastructure" of clean air and water. From an economic development standpoint, cleaning up our environment is a distinct positive in recruiting the best and brightest employees and the companies that employ them.

    Board of Trade Members Briefed on Technology Transfer and Greater Washington Business

    The May 19, 2005 Executive Briefing facilitated by Gerard Eldering, Director of Technology Transfer, The MITRE Corporation, focused on issues related to technology transfer from local universities and government agencies to local businesses.
