  • Educate employers on their ability to control cost and improve employee health through health strategy round tables, educational programs on trends in health benefits;
  • Implement the Greater Washington Health Care Workforce Enterprise, a sustainable, collaborative, regional strategy for expanding the health care workforce, and;
  • Develop policy recommendations, advocate, and educate legislators and leaders on policies to improve health care in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia with a particular focus on access to health insurance-particularly small business health insurance and Medicaid.

“Who Cares? Examining Greater Washington’s Health Care Workforce”

This study, released in June 2005, found significant workforce shortages throughout Greater Washington in 23 nursing and allied health professions. It also concluded that that the region’s educational and training institutions do not currently have the capacity to train enough workers for all current and projected openings. While there are a number of efforts taking place in different parts of the region to ease the health care workforce shortage, the Board of Trade study concludes that, “it cannot be solved by a single entity or jurisdiction. Instead solutions will require a regional effort based upon increased cooperation, collaboration and coordination among institutions and organizations within Northern Virginia, Suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia.”
