Virginia Legislative Update
Spreading the Transportation Message: The Board of Trade, in partnership with the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, hosted an educational forum in late August to help Northern Virginia business leaders to understand the substance and nuances of the transportation funding debate that is occurring and to ask them to get involved as leaders and citizens by lobbying legislators for action this year. Speakers included Virginia Secretary of Transportation Pierce Homer, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee’s Transportation Subcommittee Charles Hawkins (R-Southwest Virginia), House of Delegates member Tom Rust and local transportation experts.
General Assembly Session on Transportation Scheduled: Virginia Governor Tim Kaine along with Senate and House leaders have scheduled a special session of the General Assembly to take action on transportation funding. Committee meetings to consider specific proposals are set for Monday and Tuesday, September 25 and 26, and House and Senate floor action is set for the following days. Legislative leaders have signaled their intent to complete work by midnight, Saturday September 30. This is the top priority in Virginia for the Board of Trade and we will be asking you to help us lobby legislators to support long-term and dedicated transportation funding this year.
Transportation Coalition Making Progress: The Board of Trade has been meeting regularly with 18 other business organizations that it helped coalesce around developing a unified message and strategy for promoting transportation funding. Members of this group are meeting one-on-one with each member of the Northern Virginia delegation asking them to support and sponsor meaningful funding initiatives and to actively work toward their passage. Other plans in the works include a press event, a Richmond trip and lobbying members of the Finance Committees where the bills will be considered and voted on.
Estate Tax Finally Erased From the Books: Beginning on July 1, 2007, Virginia will no longer impose an estate tax. This was a years-long, hard fought tax battle that Virginia’s business community waged, and the Board of Trade is proud to have supported this effort.
