In previewing the year ahead, Board of Trade Chair-elect Barbara Krumsiek, The Calvert Group, highlighted 2007 priorities. Here’s an excerpt:

2007 Priorities - Growing Members’ Business

Our first priority continues to be: growing our members’ business. We are re-focusing our staff to provide you with more high-quality programming. We will offer new professional development seminars for your staff, and new educational programs focused on major trends and developments that will have a direct impact on your business.

Expanding the Regional Economy

In 2007, the Greater Washington Initiative will continue to conduct research to better articulate our region’s economic strengths. We will produce several new studies, including the popular Regional Report. Our research will help you retain and attract employees and will assist GWI in marketing Greater Washington to prospective companies.

Promoting Effective Government

Advocating for effective government is always a priority, and we plan to place a special focus on advancing regional collaboration. Our key issues – which are integral to the current and future health of our region - are transportation and emergency preparedness. We will continue to work with the federal government on regional preparedness needs, and with the O’Malley, Kaine, and Fenty administrations on our policy agenda. We are excited about the opportunity to work with all of our elected leaders, and we have already offered the business community’s assistance to them. In Virginia, we will work to make transportation THE issue in the 2007 General Assembly session and in the elections coming up next November.

Improving Regional Mobility

In addition to our work in individual jurisdictions, we will remain a leader in seeking solutions to the region’s traffic congestion. Our number one priority is to secure dedicated funding for Metro. We will also press for the completion of Maryland’s InterCounty Connector and Virginia’s Rail to Dulles.
