New Leaders for a New Year: 2006 Officers Elected. The nominees for 2006 officers who were introduced at last week’s 116th Annual Meeting have been elected by the Board of Directors: Samuel A. Schreiber, Wachovia, Chair; Barbara J. Krumsiek, The Calvert Group, Chair-Elect (and automatically chair in 2007); Anthony A. Lewis, Verizon Washington, Secretary; John M. Kane, Office Movers, Inc., Assistant Secretary; Deborah Kissire, Ernst & Young, Treasurer; Stephen P. Hills, The Washington Post, Assistant Treasurer; Catherine A. Meloy, Goodwill of Greater Washington, Assistant Treasurer; and Earl L. Segal, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld, General Counsel.
Thanks for Joining Us … 116th Annual Meeting Recaps 2005 Accomplishments. On Dec. 8, 700 members, elected officials and special guests celebrated a productive year and recognized those who have served the organization and the community. Chair-elect Samuel Schreiber previewed 2006 priorities, to be detailed in early January. Due to a prolonged Congressional hearing and a last-minute call to the White House, scheduled keynote speaker Michael Chertoff, Homeland Security Department Secretary, was unable to deliver remarks. Search for Board of Trade President Underway; Maginniss to Lead Staff during Transition. Korn/Ferry International has been selected by a Board of Directors Search Committee to undertake a national and regional search for a new Board of Trade president. Inquiries about the search should be directed to Lorraine Lavet of Korn/Ferry or Berta Maginniss. Senior Vice President Berta Maginniss will serve as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer when current President Robert A. Peck leaves at year’s end. Details
Tim Priest to Lead Economic Development Affiliate. The Greater Washington Initiative (GWI), the regional economic development marketing affiliate of the Board of Trade, has promoted Tim Priest to Executive Director, the key staff position in GWI. Priest has been with GWI since 1998 and has successfully led the organization through a transition period since June. Read press release
2006 Maryland Legislative Agenda Released. This week, the Board of Trade announced its 2006 Maryland Legislative Agenda, developed by the Board’s Maryland Public Affairs Group. Priorities for the upcoming legislative session, which begins Jan. 11, include: promoting dedicated funding for Metro, continuing support for construction of the Inter County Connector, lowering health care costs for businesses, and increasing higher education funding. DC Council Update: Business Community Action Helps Reduce New Taxes for Schools. Following urging by the Board of Trade and other business groups, the DC Council’s education committee reduced its proposal of $1 billion in new business taxes to fund the renovation of DC schools. The education committee voted to increase the cigarette sales tax and the commercial property tax to generate more than $300 million, with another $1 billion from other sources. The Board of Trade continues to work with the Council and school system to take on the monumental task of fixing the city’s public schools effectively.
