Maryland Governor O’Malley Calls for a Special Session to Address Budget Deficit. On Monday, MD Gov. Martin O’Malley called on members of the general assembly for a special session starting Oct. 29. The session will address the $1.7 billion budget deficit that may require raising sales, corporate, tobacco and vehicle titling taxes, and overhauling the state’s income tax. Additionally, the Governor is receptive to a referendum on recapturing slot-machine revenues. Gov. O’Malley’s proposal would also generate nearly $400 million in new transportation funding. BP Solar's Lee Edwards to Address 2007 Potomac Conference. Lee Edwards, President and CEO of Frederick-based BP Solar, will discuss the future of alternative energy in Greater Washington at the upcoming Potomac Conference, scheduled Oct. 29-30. The invite-only, CEO-level conference will also welcome VA Gov. Tim Kaine, MD Gov. Washingtonian Magazine and Board of Trade Salute Great Places to Work. At a luncheon today , Washingtonian Magazine and the Greater Washington Board of Trade honored the organizations designated as “Great Places to Work” - a coveted prize among the region’s most employee-friendly companies. Keynote speaker, Paul S. Speranza, Jr., U.S. Chamber of Commerce Chairman and senior executive for Wegmans Food Markets, discussed what it takes to be a great place to work.

Area Business Groups Commission Transportation Study. Roadway congestion in the Baltimore-Washington, DC region costs Maryland more than $3 billion per year -- $1 billion in the Baltimore area and more than $2 billion in the DC area, according to findings of a Texas Transportation Institute commissioned by the Greater Baltimore Committee, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. The cost of congestion in Maryland has increased almost 1,200% since 1982. The Board of Trade supports a minimum annual increase of $600 million in new funding as a start in order to address the construction of deferred road and rail projects.
