One Day, Two Candidates: MD PAC to Interview Ehrlich, O’Malley.
Tomorrow, the two candidates for Governor in Maryland – Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley – will visit the Board of Trade to meet with the MD Political Action Committee and to seek an endorsement prior to the Nov. 7 general election. The Board of Trade’s MD PAC will interview each candidate separately about business issues and their visions for the state. Stay tuned for details! Questions?
Board of Trade Applauds Fenty’s Selection for City Administrator.
Earlier this week, the Board of Trade applauded Adrian Fenty’s selection of Dan Tangherlini to become Washington, DC’s next city administrator, pending Fenty’s presumed win in the November Mayoral election. Citing his management skills and commitment to public service, the Board of Trade expressed confidence in Tangherlini, who managed the District’s transportation department for 6 years before becoming Metro’s interim general manager. Stuck in Traffic: VA General Assembly Brings Home No Transportation Funds.
Last week, the Virginia General Assembly returned home from a special session with no funds to address the critical shortfall in funding for transportation projects. Although the outcome is disappointing, the Board of Trade and other business organizations helped raise the profile of this critical issue, and will continue to push for transportation funds in the 2007 session. Special thanks to all participants on a Sept. 26 advocacy trip to Richmond. Questions?
Metro Funding Legislation Will Return to U.S. Senate in November.
The federal bill to provide dedicated funding for Metro, introduced by Rep. Tom Davis, will be considered by the full Senate during a “lame duck” session of Congress beginning Nov. 13. Prior to this session, the Board of Trade will let members know how best to support this key legislation. Questions?
Greater Washington Initiative Promotes Region in Australia.
At the invitation of the Australian government, April DuBois, GWI’s international business development director, recently met with more than 60 companies on an economic development mission to Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. The companies were identified by federal and state officials as being interested in expanding to the U.S. With GWI’s support, and benefits from a free trade agreement with the U.S., nearly 25 Australian firms have expanded to Greater Washington over the past few years.
