Governors Kaine and O’Malley, Mayor Fenty to Participate in 2007 Potomac Conference. In an historic joint appearance, VA Governor Tim Kaine, MD Governor Martin O’Malley and DC Mayor Adrian Fenty will each discuss their vision for a “green” region on Oct. 30, during the 2007 Potomac Conference. The invite-only Conference, entitled “Green as a Competitive Advantage,” will gather private, public and nonprofit executives to develop a regional leadership agenda for the environment. Andrew Winston, nationally-recognized environmental business expert and co-author of the new book, Green to Gold, will keynote. More info on Potomac Conference
Daniel Flores to Join Board of Trade Advocacy Team. With experience in government and community relations, including corporate, nonprofit and association expertise, Daniel S. Flores (left) will join the Board of Trade on Oct. 1 as Senior Regional Director for Government Affairs. In this position, Flores will oversee a team of professionals positioned to address critical issues through regional collaboration and strong advocacy. Since December of 2005, Daniel Flores has served as president and CEO of the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Read more

Development Around Metro, DC Council Issues are Topics for September Advocacy Programs… On Sept. 19, the Board of Trade’s Transportation Committee and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman welcome MD Transportation Secretary John Porcari along with Metro GM John Catoe to address development and funding issues, and DC Councilmember Muriel Bowser will discuss upcoming issues facing the DC Council with members on Sept. 11.
And Business Ethics and Leadership are Educational Topics this Month. The Small Business Network kicks off its fall workshop series on Sept. 12 with a panel discussion on how best to establish ethical business practices to enhance your firm’s communication, management, and overall performance. Joan Fletcher, President of Winning Ways, Inc., brings 20 years of entrepreneurship, management and coaching experience to the Board of Trade’s Leadership Speaker Series on Sept. 20. Questions?
Economic Development Update
Economic News: Area Ranks Second in Nation in Median Household Income. In case you missed recent media coverage, Greater Washington now ranks second (behind San Jose) among US metro regions in median household income, according to US Census data analyzed recently by the Greater Washington Initiative. The region’s median household income ($78,978) is 39% above the national average. If San Jose and San Francisco (which ranked third) were combined into one metro area that compared more closely in population, Greater Washington would rank first nationally. And not surprisingly, Greater Washington boasts seven counties in the top 15 nationally. Read more
GWI to Promote Region at UK Exhibition. Next week, the Greater Washington Initiative will promote the region and highlight opportunities for UK/US partnerships at DSEi (Defence Systems & Equipment International), the world’s largest, integrated defense exhibition. GWI’s International Business Development Director April DuBois will speak at the event, along with a distinguished panel of global defense experts, including The Hon. William Greenwalt, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Industrial Policy, and execs from Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and Thales. For more info, contact April DuBois.
