Thanks to Hard-working Volunteers, DC Middle School is Cleaner, Brighter Place for Students. It’s amazing what gets accomplished with many hands! In response to DC Mayor Fenty’s challenge to the business community, the Board of Trade partnered with Vornado/Charles E. Smith to “adopt” Francis Junior High School in the city’s “Buff and Scrub Initiative.” On Aug. 6 and 11, 275 volunteers from nearly 50 companies braved the heat to paint, clean and update the school before students arrive next week. The Board of Trade will continue to work with the Fenty Administration, as requested, on critical public school needs. View photos

Joint Study to Examine Maryland Transportation Funding Options. To help inform business and government leaders, the Board of Trade is collaborating with the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Baltimore Committee on a joint study that examines the economic impact of an infusion of approximately $400 to $600 million annually in new transportation funds. This report, to be available in mid-September, is timely since Gov. O’Malley recently pledged to offer a major transportation funding bill during the next MD legislative session. Increasing the state’s gas tax, sales tax, or state corporate income tax remain possible options. Read article on Gov. O’Malley’s plans. Questions?
