An Aerospace Capital: New Publication to Highlight Region’s Aerospace Assets. The Greater Washington Initiative will release a new publication at the Paris Air Show in June that includes some impressive facts: 800+ companies are conducting aerospace and defense work in Greater Washington, and 33 area R&D facilities are engaged in aerospace-related research. To attract international business to the area, GWI executives will host three educational programs at the show, including an event keynoted by The Hon. Michael Wynne, Secretary of the U.S. Air Force. Pat McGuire Honored as 2007 Leader of the Years. Nearly 400 people celebrated the professional achievements and civic contributions of Patricia McGuire (left), president of Trinity (Washington) University, at a Recognition Dinner last week. Washington Post Chairman Donald Graham spoke about McGuire’s dedication to DC youth, and Meyer Foundation President Julie Rogers noted her significant contributions to the Girl Scouts. View photos

Metro Funding Legislation Introduced in U.S. Senate. Yesterday, U.S. Senators from Maryland and Virginia introduced legislation to provide up to $1.5 billion in new federal funding for Metro, with matching funds required by DC, MD and VA. Virginia: New House Minority Leader Responds to Members’ Questions. In his new role leading the state’s Democrats, Ward Armstrong (D-Martinsville), the Virginia House Minority Leader, traveled to Northern Virginia last week to meet with Board of Trade members. Delegate Armstrong spoke passionately about the need to invest in Virginia’s infrastructure, especially transportation and higher education, without pitting those critical needs against each other. Maryland: Board of Trade Urges Legislators to Address Transportation Funding. With the state of Maryland facing a major budget shortfall, the Board of Trade is urging legislators to focus on the critical need to increase funding for transportation. Read Washington Post “Close to Home” article
DC: Tax on Emergency Communications Defeated. The Board of Trade was instrumental in helping to defeat a recent attempt by the DC Council to double the fees on emergency communications (E-911) lines. The bill would have raised DC’s current surcharge to one of the highest in the nation. Read letter
