MD Candidates O’Malley, Duncan to Meet Members at June 14 Forum. Mark your calendar for a forum with Maryland’s Democratic gubernatorial candidates, scheduled for 11:30 am to 2 pm on June 14. Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan and Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley will give their views on regional business issues, including transportation, health care and higher education. VA Transportation Funding Update: Time for House Action. Last week, the VA Senate sent legislation to the House of Delegates that would provide $750 million in new transportation funding statewide and $400 million annually for Northern VA…Now it’s up to the House, which has postponed action until this fall. Special thanks to Transportation and Environment Committee co-chair Michael Anzilotti (Virginia Commerce Bancorp) who spoke passionately on behalf of the Board at a May 4 meeting. Members are encouraged to contact their VA Delegate to urge swift action to solve our transportation crisis. Questions?
DC Takes First Step on Metro Funding. Moving ahead of legislators in Virginia and Maryland, DC Mayor Anthony Williams recently signed legislation dedicating sales tax revenues to special funds for Metro. These funds are designed to provide a local match for $1.5 billion in federal funds being pursued by U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R–VA). Sam Black, president of BTRAC and Bob Grow, BTRAC executive director, were recognized by Mayor Williams during the signing ceremony. Questions?
A Home Run: Board Congratulates Local Baseball Owners. In a congratulatory letter sent to Theodore Lerner, the Board of Trade called the local ownership announcement a “positive step forward for the team and for our region.” The Board of Trade noted in the letter that “we look forward to working with Major League Baseball, the DC government, and the Lerner group to ensure the stadium project provides maximum benefit to our entire community.” Questions?
Small Business Academy Class Begins! While most of us look ahead to summer breaks, the 2006 class of the Board of Trade’s Small Business Academy is just getting started. Classes to help entrepreneurs plan for their firm’s strategic development began last week. Meet the participating entrepreneurs in this six-month program taught by members. Questions?
