New Bioscience Analysis Maps Resources, More GWI Publications Underway. In conjunction with the Biotechnology Industry Association (BIO) trade show this week, the Greater Washington Initiative has updated a Bioscience Industry brochure that includes a map of regional bioscience resources. Upcoming research publications include: 2007 Regional Report (June 6 release) and Aerospace & Defense Industry Overview (June 15 release). Also, GWI’s recently released study of Greater Washington’s human capital is at www.greaterwashington.org.
Fenty and DC Administration Leaders Outline Priorities. DC Mayor Adrian Fenty and key members of his administration answered questions from members of the Board of Trade and the American Society of Association Executives at a joint program on May 2. Administration officials - including Neil Albert (right), deputy mayor for economic development; Victor Reinoso (left), deputy mayor for education, and Chief Cathy Lanier (center), Metropolitan Police Department - outlined their priorities and how associations and businesses in DC can help make the city a better place to live and work.
MD Transportation Secretary Underscores Support for ICC. In a member briefing last week, MD Secretary of Transportation John Porcari (left) reviewed the status of key transportation priorities, noting Gov. O’Malley’s staunch support for building the ICC and for dedicated funding for Metro. Secretary Porcari has worked closely with the Board of Trade, most recently as a member of the Board’s Maryland Public Affairs Group representing the University of Maryland and – prior to that – as Transportation Secretary under Governor Glendening. Board of Trade to Celebrate “Post 200.” On June 13, the Board of Trade will partner with The Washington Post to host a first-ever gathering of the “Post 200,” honoring the region’s leading, largest companies. Recognizing the vitality of Greater Washington businesses, the event offers an opportunity for corporate CEOs to discuss trends and analysis featured in The Washington Post report. Questions?
Governor O’Malley to Address Board of Trade Directors. MD Gov. Martin O’Malley is scheduled to meet with the Board of Trade’s Board of Directors on June 28 to discuss state and regional priorities, including transportation, the environment, state finances and more. Green is Good for Business. The Board of Trade’s highly regarded Potomac Conference, which convenes regional leaders from government, business, non-profits and the media, has set the agenda for this year’s initiative: Green as a Competitive Advantage. The 2007 Potomac Conference, scheduled for October, will address how environmental sustainability and energy efficiency present big opportunities for the region and for businesses. For Your HR Executive: New Site Helps Employers Find Quality Talent. With the support and reach of the Board of Trade and 10 area chambers of commerce, Capital Region Careers, a new online job board, helps members fill open positions with quality employees. Professional Development Program is Very Well Received. The Board of Trade’s professional development programs, launched last week with a Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center course, focused on “legendary service.” Participants raved about quality of the program that helped them translate exceptional customer service into their firm’s culture. New Membership Director to Focus on Recruitment. Kevin O’Neill, whose marketing and sales career spans more than 25 years, joined the Board of Trade staff this week. He has served in executive positions with MBNA America – formerly the nation’s largest credit card company, and United Way of Delaware. A Northern Virginia native and Georgetown University graduate, Kevin also brings volunteer leadership experience with the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.
