GWI Releases New Study of Greater Washington’s Global Economy. Today, the Greater Washington Initiative released Greater Washington: International Commerce and Culture, a study that compares the region to 11 major metro areas around the world and highlights changes in this sector since 2000. It confirms the total economic impact of international commerce kept pace with our growing economy, remaining approximately 13% of GRP. Download Study Purchase Lists of Area’s Global Firms
How Best to Prepare? Members Invited to Seminar on Pandemic Flu. Board of Trade members are encouraged to join local officials for a pandemic influenza summit on Friday, April 28, from 8am to 4:30pm at Gallaudet University. The summit’s goal is to ensure that officials, community and business leaders will all be on the same page when dealing with such a major threat. "How to prepare” materials and tips will focus on business continuity issues during an epidemic. More details and registration info will be available at the DC government’s website, www.dc.gov.
Board Urges VA Legislature to Keep Transportation Funding in Budget. In a recent letter to leaders of the Virginia General Assembly and at press conferences yesterday, the Board of Trade strongly advocated for dedicated funding for Metro, as well as for a comprehensive transportation package that is incorporated in the state’s budget. MD General Assembly Session Ends with Major Issues Unresolved. The MD General Assembly adjourned on Monday, although a special session on utility rate increases is still possible. The Board of Trade fought for a 12.5% increase in higher education funding, transportation funding and nano-biotech research. While the legislature did not pass dedicated funding for Metro, the Board was instrumental in obtaining passage of a bill requiring a study of statewide transit needs. Candidates Meet, Mingle with Members. Last week, DC Councilmember David Catania spoke to nearly 50 Board of Trade members about numerous issues, including the National Capital Medical Center and the importance of reviewing whether the proposed hospital meets community needs. Mayoral candidates Marie Johns and Michael Brown also attended a recent Board of Trade networking event. A summer endorsement of DC candidates is anticipated. Questions?
