Transportation Priority Moves Forward! Board Applauds Rail to Dulles Decision. A deal to extend Metrorail from West Falls Church through Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County won state approval on Monday. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) will assume control of the Dulles Toll Road and also assume financial responsibility for the Metrorail extension. Recognizing MWAA’s outstanding record of accomplishment, the Board of Trade passed a resolution in February supporting the Authority’s proposal. Read More
Wellness Works Blood Pressure Screening Set for May 22-26. Get ready to participate in the first event of Wellness Works 2006: High Blood Pressure is Risky Business. In conjunction with National High Blood Pressure Awareness month, the Board’s Health Care Task Force is aiming to screen 1,000 employees at free blood pressure screenings at office buildings across the region! How to Plan for Regional Growth? Organizations Agree to Take Next Steps. The Board of Trade and two other regional organizations are developing an “Envision Greater Washington Working Group” to create a framework to address the anticipated growth in population and jobs. This “Phase One” step, approved by directors of the Board of Trade, the Council of Governments, and the Community Foundation, followed last month’s winter meeting of the Potomac Conference. The new Working Group – comprised of approximately 30 persons from the public, business and civic sectors – will develop a work plan over the next 90 days. Read more
Support Continues in MD, VA for Dedicated Funding for Metro. Last week, the Board of Trade testified in favor of a Maryland Senate bill to establish dedicated transit funding for Metro. The Board of Trade has been invited to participate in a House workgroup meeting this week on the legislation. And in Richmond, the Board of Trade continues to push for a final Virginia budget deal that includes a provision for selected area jurisdictions to have the option of raising a dedicated sales tax to fund Metro.
