Board of Trade Endorses Mayor's Education Plan. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trade voted yesterday to endorse Mayor Fenty's education plan. On February 20, the Board of Trade - in partnership with the Federal City Council and DC Chamber of Commerce - will testify in support of the plan before the DC Council. The testimony will be posted on www.boardoftrade.org next week. The Executive Committee also expressed that now is a critical and opportune time to address the District’s public schools system and that the business community stands ready to assist. A Critical Week for Transportation Funding in VA! Tomorrow, the VA Senate Finance Committee will vote on a transportation funding bill that is strongly supported by the Board of Trade. The legislation, which has the best chance for successful passage in 20+ years, would provide more than $1 billion statewide and $400 million for Northern Virginia, including $50 million required for the federal Metro funding match. To help push this funding bill over the finish line, please contact your Virginia Senators TODAY. Fiscal Issues Looming in Maryland. While the InterCounty Connector remains funded and on-schedule, MD Gov. O'Malley has expressed the need for more transportation revenues. Currently, the legislature is considering several bills to increase revenues for the Transportation Trust Fund. However, it’s unclear whether they will be approved this year, since the debate over transportation funding could become tied to a broader revenue discussion, with large budget deficits projected for the State's General Fund. The Board of Trade is working to ensure that dedicated funding for Metro and other regional priorities are included in any final legislation.
