Board of Trade Continues Dulles Rail Push. The Board of Trade is continuing to support the Metrorail extension to Tysons and Dulles. Most recently, President & CEO of the Board of Trade Jim Dinegar and Virginia State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli debated the Dulles rail in point/counterpoint articles that ran in the Feb. 10 Washington Post. Meanwhile, Virginia Gov. Kaine and US Secretary of Transportation Peters are keeping channels open for discussion and negotiation of the Dulles rail project; the construction contract has been extended through the end of February and project funding remains in the federal budget.
Support for Maryland’s Transit Oriented Development. On Feb. 6 and 12, the Board of Trade Government Relations team testified before Maryland’s Senate Finance Committee and House Environmental Matters Committee in support of a proposed bill that will facilitate transit oriented development in Maryland. The bill will confirm the Maryland Department of Transportation’s authority to use its property and resources to advance dense, mixed use, deliberately planned development within a half-mile radius of many transit stations. O’Malley Presents State of the State. Maryland Gov. O’Malley delivered his second annual State of the State Address on Jan. 23, focusing on improving public safety and public education. O’Malley also underscored the need for environmental sustainability, including protecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay, and asked for support of Maryland’s transit oriented development legislation to revitalize communities and curb urban sprawl.
