Since its founding in 1889, the Greater Washington Board of Trade has played key roles in the development of Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland. Among other historic accomplishments, the Board of Trade:
1902 – Promoted the construction of Union Station
1937 – Envisioned the city’s subway system
1966 – Created the Washington Area Transit Authority to build and operate Metrorail and Metrobus
1987 – Secured the transfer of National and Dulles airports from federal to local control, paving the way for expansion and renovations
1990s – Obtained funding for the reconstruction of Woodrow Wilson Bridge
2001 – Worked to get Reagan National Airport reopened after its extended closure following September 11
2002 – Established a National Capital Region Coordination office in the federal Department of Homeland Security
2008 – Helped secure $3 billion in long-term dedicated funding for Metro’s maintenance and capacity expansion needs and got Dulles Rail back on track
- Hosted the second Potomac Conference on greening our region with the Virginia and Maryland governors, the DC mayor and top business leaders
- Collaborated with the FBI and Metropolitan Police Department to prepare the business community for President Obama’s historic Inauguration
